Amazon launches its own Mac Downloadable store
Amazon seems determined to one-up Apple. Amazon just recently opened its own Android app store and now its following that up with its own store for Mac software downloads.
That's right Amazon is opening a Mac software download store something remarkably similar to Apple's own Mac App Store that opened earlier this year. The success of its mobile app store has motivated both Apple and Amazon to explore the same business framework for software and game titles.
Amazon's Mac store has 250 of the biggest software and game titles available for the Mac, according to Time Techland. In fact Amazon is boasting that they have titles that Apple's store doesn't. Amazon has one of the bigger titles on the Mac, the Microsoft Office which is not available from Apple. Amazon also has games from Feral Interactive, Electronic Arts and Aspyr, utilities like Roxio Toast and other titles.
Apple and Amazon have a fractious relationship when Amazon used the term 'app store' for its Android software store. In fact Apple didn't like it so much it filed legal suit against Amazon for using the term.
Apple may still have the market lead when it comes to Mac downloads since Amazon is just reselling downloadable versions of mainstream titles. The Mac App store on the other hand allows users to sample apps from smaller developers.
Amazon does have the upper hand when it comes to pricing. It has more aggressive prices and its Mac download store features an install-less download process where the user will only get the product without any unwanted extras. The process is easier and faster and downloads are stored in the user's Games and Software Library where you can download the app again for personal use.
It's unclear what the next move will be for Amazon and Apple. For now the user should enjoy having more choices in Mac downloads.
