Amir Khan On Mayweather-Pacquiao Fight: ‘I Want To See It’
Amir Khan may be waiting in the wings in case the super fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao fails to materialise. Khan is a top contender for Mayweather and Pacquiao if the long-anticipated bout believed to be the richest ever in the history of boxing doesn’t happen. However, Khan has also made it clear that he is also hoping that the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight will become a reality.
“At the end of the day, everybody wants to see that fight,” Khan told ESPN. “I want to see it.”
Even though the fight wouldn’t be as huge as it would have been when it was first laid on the table five years ago, Khan thinks that the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight would still be the biggest in boxing. It is the fight that boxing fans have craved since 2009.
Khan said he wouldn’t dispute if Mayweather finally decided to fight Pacquiao. Back in 2014, Khan was also a leading contender for Mayweather. The undefeated American fighter even initiated a poll asking boxing fans to vote for Khan or Marcos Maidana for his next fight. Khan ended up winning the poll but Mayweather has kept him hanging for months until announcing on his 37th birthday that he would be fighting Maidana instead of the British boxer.
According to Khan, Mayweather likes to leave everything until the last minute, but just because Mayweather is not making any announcement about his next fight doesn’t mean that he is not preparing or doing something. Khan is certain that Mayweather is doing some training regardless of who he fights in May.
Is Mayweather really dragging the Pacquiao fight on as long as he can? For all fans know, Mayweather could just be taking his sweet time to execute everything needed for his next fight as it should be. Still, Khan declines to accept his defeat in his endeavours to secure a fight with Mayweather. He also insists that he is in a very good position because he can get either Mayweather or Pacquiao. Khan has reportedly started training for his next fight.
Meanwhile, trainer Robert Garcia believes that Khan is a fighter who can certainly give either Mayweather or Pacquiao trouble. Garcia said in an article by Boxing Scene that Khan’s speed and punching power are potential threats to the two fighters that he is chasing. Robert thinks that if Khan can make a repeat performance of his victory over Devon Alexander in December 2014, the Bolton boxer would not have that much problem facing Mayweather, Pacquiao or any other fighter.
Khan has won all four of his fights since his loss to Danny Garcia in 2012. He last fought in December 2014, where he was awarded a unanimous victory after a dominant performance against Alexander.
