The family of Sony Xperia handsets, which includes the Sony Xperia Z, the Xperia ZL and Xperia ZR, as well as the tablet, Xperia Tablet Z, will get a face lift after users download the Android 4.4 Kitkat update.

"We've been building new Sony experiences on Google's Kitkat release to create some neat/sweet features (if we say so ourselves)—in addition to a few performance tweaks here and there," said Sony via its official Sony Mobile Blog.

The Sony User Experience upgrade is already out and available for download. It will feature a handful of additions apart from the Android 4.4 Kitkat standard, which will bring better performance and user interface optimisation.

Some of these include a similar user interface as what can be seen on the PS4, Sony's next-gen console, which will include the launch animation and live wall paper on the lock and home screens. In addition, the native app portfolio of Sony will be upgraded to the latest versions. The highlights include adjusted UI and Emoji support for Messaging more mails loading on the Email, the debut of the social imaging experience via the Smart Social Camera and a Battery STAMINA Mode for better power management.

According to Gadgets NDTV, this follows Sony's announcement in March, which saw the Android 4.4 Kitkat update for the newer family of Xperia handsets, the Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia Z Ultra.

Lenovo Vibe X and Z Also in Line for Kitkat

Not to be out-updated by other brands, Lenovo is also putting forward two of its top handsets, the Lenovo Vibe X and Z, on the list for Android 4.4 Kitkat update. Mobiletor reports the update will debut by the end of May.

For the Lenovo Vibe X, the Android 4.4 Kitkat will bring better app compatibility, a few bug fixes and improvements on security, and a more efficient battery use.

Some improvements in camera, such as autofocus and better white balance capabilities, are also expected for the Lenovo Vibe X and Z, as per Fone Arena.

Samsung and Australian Carriers on Android 4.4 Kitkat Update

In Australia, a number of carriers have updated their list of handsets that will be getting the Android 4.4 Kitkat. Focusing on the list of Samsung phones, Gotta Be Mobile reports the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has been confirmed for the update by Vodafone Australia and Optus, though it seems the actual release date of the update will be June.

The two aforementioned carriers have also given an estimate of May or June for the Samsung Galaxy S4 update, though Telstra Australia has not yet given any indication in the near future.
