Google's upcoming major Android version, 4.4 KitKat will deliver tons of new features, changes and specifications among Android-running devices. However, an update can bring bugs and possible issues to devices. So what problems will consumers face from Android 4.4 KitKat?

Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS

Android 4.4 KitKat clues do not include specifics regarding Wi-Fi and GPS upgrades as of now, though Google may unveil them on the launching date. Bluetooth Smart aka Low Energy has been included to the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean as one of its major features and mostly likely featured by 4.4 KitKat as well.

However, new firmware releases such as major version with complete system revamped may include problems. In the Nexus 7 2013, it was reported suffering touchscreen and GPS problems running Android 4.3. Google immediately released an update which fixed the bugs.

Once you have received the Android 4.4 KitKat update, immediately check all connectivity and in case there is a problem, report it as soon as possible so that Google can quickly fix it.

Deletion of System Files during the Update

A major software update may cause your data files to be removed from the device which means you need to make a backup. There are times that push update may not notify to "create a backup" before installing it and you'll forget to perform one because of too much excitement.

Manually create a backup of all multimedia files, documents, APN settings, contacts, messages and everything else you may need on a computer to save hassle on bringing them back if ever the Android 4.4 update deletes them.

Battery Issues

Pre-release or first time released software may include battery problems such as easy draining or too low battery life. Normally, a device requires "Battery Calibration" to be able to reset its battery details after a firmware has been installed. Android 4.4 KitKat would be similar to flashing a new ROM on the system unlike with the Android Jelly Bean updates. Calibrating adjusts the battery information properly which used on devices running customised ROMs or newly restored stock ROMs.

For first time installation, download battery calibration app from the Google Play store to restore the original battery details used by Android. If ever the draining and short life continues to plague your device, report it immediately with complete details.

Network Instability

Android KitKat features wider global network coverage for all devices running the version. But the update may contain some errors on selected devices about network instability - unstable connection, low signal, unable to text or call.

Double check if your network carrier are not suffering any problems regarding network service after the update or make sure that you are located in an area with good network coverage. If all precautions and inquiry have revealed no problems and yet your phone still suffers network issue after the update, report the problem to Google and to the device's manufacturer.

Shortness on Response and Other System Problems

Touchscreen problem would be the most noticeable among all bugs since you do know how your device responds. Once the update has been installed, let the device process and load everything before navigating on the screen - a major update takes time to load on the first time.

Observe for the next 24 hours if the touchscreen, user interface, tasks launching, sound, display, memory card, videos, music player and others are all working. Android 4.4 KitKat will force you to explore and so spend several hours to check everything out.

Tips before Updating your Device

Regardless if the update prompts you or not with a warning, there are certain things you should know before updating your device.

1. Always make a backup of all your personal information and data files before installing unless the update notifies you that no personal settings will be affected - hopefully no bug on this one.

2. Update the device with good battery level. It is recommended to update your device with at least 50 per cent battery or it may get corrupted if the device dies during the installation.

3. Stable Internet connection is required to update the software. Use Wi-Fi connection to get OTA update or use PC software according to your manufacturer (Samsung Kies, Sony PC Companion) to get the new firmware.

4. Do not perform manual flashing. Only advanced users are recommended to do it and if you are not knowledgeable, do not even try. You may damage or even brick your Android device during manual flashing. Be patient till the update reaches your device.

5. Never interrupt! Once the update procedure begins, never interrupt it by turning the device off or the computer because it takes time. Interrupting an update improperly may corrupt your device and can cause soft bricking.

Remember, that no firmware or operating system is perfect and it applies to Android as well. Google will release fixes and tweaks once any errors are reported to solve any Android 4.4 KitKat sourness.
