Android 5.0 L vs Apple iOS 8: Why Android Topped iOS, The Big Difference
Google's Android and Apple's iOS have always fought for OS supremacy with both companies set to put out major updates this fall or before the year ends. In the latest research results monitoring OS usage, Android appears to have surpassed the iOS dominating finally but by not as much. Android reportedly now has 84.6% of the market share in 2Q14 vesrsus 80.2% market share in 2Q13. However, the gap between Android and iOS does not mean that Google is set for life as Apple threatens to release its iOS 8. More importantly, analysts note that there is a big difference between market share and being profitable. Which is which for the two mobile operating systems?
Strategy Analytics released the recent data on Android mobile market share. The gain cost market shares on the part of Blackberry, Microsoft's Windows Phone and Apple's iOS. According to the Market Realist, the gains on Google's part may partly be due to the steps the company has been taking to secure its position. A few months back, the internet giant has revealed its upcoming OS update, the Android L. The upcoming update offers new convenient access options like unlocking device without password but through WiFi or Bluetooth network, sharper and brighter themes with improved design.
Google has also revealed its Android One operating system plan targeting emerging markets. Under this initiative Google wants to coordinate with a number of smartphone manufacturers to create sub-standard smartphones running on Android One. The devices will start at $100 and will roll out in India to start. Google wants to capture another large market without imposing as much on the budget and preferences of users.
Despite the promising trends for Google's Android, Seeking Alpha noted that the market of the share will eventually decline. The fractured ecosystem of Android is leverage on its part because it is flexible. However, companies like Apple and Microsoft have also been boosting up their efforts giving Google a run for its money. Google can generate revenue but it may not be able to sustain such growth with the market's interest intensifying over Apple's iOS. Apple's recent announcement of the iOS 8 and its upcoming features threatens Google's flexible nature as the Cupertino giant plans to give developers more control over the platform.
So who will it? Android L or iOS 8?
It is still too far out to tell until both companies unveil their hardware cycles running on the latest platforms. Apple has released an invite to its September 9 event with Google left to announce yet.
