Android 5.0 Lollipop’s ‘Priority Mode’ Is The New ‘Silent Mode’
The non-availability of Android 5.0 Lollipop's "Silent Mode" has garnered quite a feedback from various, baffled Android device users. The sudden removal of the aforementioned feature made Android users to think if this could be a critical bug in the latest software update. However, the mode removal in Lollipop update is part of the new changes pertaining to the notifications. With the new update, Android users get more control over the notifications. To mitigate the confusion among perplexed users, Google has come up with an explanation for the Silent Mode removal.
It is worth noting that, Google is known to introduce new features and changes but never spoon-fed the users by explaining the obvious features. Nevertheless, the search giant has always gone out of its way to explain significant changes. Even though the Silent Mode removal is not quite significant in Google's scale, the search giant has explained the removal and the straight-forward way to get the feature, according to Phone Arena.
Previously, when the volume rocker on the side of the Android device is pressed and held down, the volume would come down and then the mode will fall to vibrate-only mode and at last to Silent Mode. With the recent changes on Android 5.0 Lollipop, the process is tweaked, but then the Silent Mode functionality is not removed completely. When the volume is lowered with the help of the volume rocker, the popup now shows new options on the volume settings like "Priority Mode" and "None," among others.
Using the new setting, a user need not reduce the phone volume and then hit the vibrate mode, followed by the Silent Mode. The new update requires the user to tap once on the "Priority Mode" and ergo, the phone will be on Silent Mode. This means, the Priority Mode is the new Silent Mode.
In a way, the Priority Mode is more powerful than the traditional Silent Mode. In general, the new Priority notifications provide three modes called None, Priority and All. The Priority Mode will only allow a selected set of notifications to get the user's attention. Hence, the user will see a "star" mark on the status bar of the phone when in Priority Mode. The None Mode, on the other hand, will let the phone receive all notifications; however, it will not warn or notify the phone user, says NDTV.
