Android Users’ Guide to Google Maps Navigation, Now Indoors Too
Google Map, one of the applications used in Android mobile phones, allows the owner to view directions and places and even provides traffic advisories, sparing the need to bring a compass or a paper map.
Recently, this application was further improved, although still in a beta stage. The improved application allows the user to view indoor areas, besides the standard outdoor view option.
Android users would benefit from pointers on this simple yet great application, specifically its navigation and search destination functions.
Google Maps Navigation
Although still in beta stage, this application is an Internet-connected GPS navigation system with voice guidance which navigates from current location to selected destination. It has text and voice support to select the desired location and options on how to reach it faster. Its search function is the same as when doing Google searches - just type the kind, type or name of the place you want to go.
The application also includes traffic view, which determines how heavy the current situation is by color indications; search along the route for establishments; 3D view for higher imagery; street view for visualisation; walking navigation; public transit navigation and even offline rerouting if the network connection is lost.
Google Places
This function recommends places for the searcher. For example, if the smartphone owner does not know which restaurant or theater is near or more conveniently along the way, all he has to do is simply ask Google Places.
The application allows the searcher to find the right places, provides detailed information such as directions, reviews, contacts, and more. It also has personalised search results or recommendations from friends and reviews from others who have visited the area. It is directly connected with Google Maps, which facilitates the search for the place.
Google Maps 3D Support
This is for high-powered devices with Android platforms. High-powered devices allow the gadget owner to view the map in 3D mode by dragging down two fingers to tilt. The owner can then zoom in on one of the 100 plus cities around the world with 3D buildings for the skyline to come to life. For a new perspective, twist it with two fingers to rotate and view from any direction.
It also acts a digital compass but with 3D view. From a location, the owner should tap the compass button and it will rotate to the direction the owner is facing. This is highly useful even in the urban jungle, especially if the owner is lost. The application has smooth zooming support and offline system.
Google Latitude
This function allows the smartphone owner to locate his friends on the map to find out who are nearby, which would facilitate meeting them. It also allows the owner to share his location with family and friends, helping both parties stay in touch.
The sharing control function allows the owner to filter on how others will see him and at different levels of detail. The privacy settings give the owner the option to set or hide location at any time.
Indoor Maps
This is the latest with the Google Map update and it's hot right now because it allows a view of what's inside, not just the outside. This improvement allows the smartphone owner to view what is inside malls, airports or anything inside the establishment itself.
The viewing includes floors similar to what could be found in mall directories. The update also improves the accuracy of directions for driving, walking, public transit and even biking.
Google Maps has even expanded its application by allowing the phone owner to customise his own map by saving visited areas or even generating your own with the Map Maker.
