The hacker collective Anonymous has vowed to "destroy" Facebook on Nov. 5, according to the group's official YouTube channel announced on Tuesday.

"Your medium of communication you all so dearly adore will be destroyed," the group wrote in a transcript of its YouTube video. "If you are a willing hacktivist or a guy who just wants to protect the freedom of information then join the cause and kill facebook [sic] for the sake of your own privacy."

Anonymous claims that their plans to hack Facebook is a protest against privacy issues in the popular social media site. The group also states that Facebook's privacy controls are a joke and that users cannot delete their accounts if they want to.

"Everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook regardless of your 'privacy' settings, and deleting your account is impossible, even if you 'delete' your account, all your personal info stays on Facebook and can be recovered at any time," the group wrote. "Changing the privacy settings to make your Facebook account more 'private' is also a delusion. Facebook knows more about you than your family."

The Nov. 5 date is Guy Fawkes Day when Britain commemorates Fawkes and his attempt to destroy the British House of Lords in 1605. Fawkes has become a symbol to activists and those who oppose authority.

Anonymous has been in the news recently with a successful hack attack on the Syrian Ministry of Defense's website. The group has also attacked other government websites and major corporations like Sony, Bank of America and PayPal. Facebook isn't the only social network the hacktivist group has had problems with. The group was banned from Google+ prompting the hacktivist collective to start their own social network.

Facebook has not commented on the Anonymous threat.
