Apple Inc's iPad Touchscreen Hailed Most Responsive in Agawi Benchmark Tests

Apple Inc's iPad has been hailed as the most responsive screen among touchscreen tablets. Agawi performed a series of tests to find out which among a number of flagship tablets have the most responsive touchscreen. Apple Inc's iPad bested the tablets of Samsung, Microsoft and Google as it passed the TouchMarks touchscreen benchmark test with flying colours.

The benchmark test evaluates each of the tablet's touch latency. The test measures the time it takes to open an application with one tap using a special type of hardware. While the touch latency is generally small, Agawi has created an output graph to illustrate the differences.

Apple's iPad mini, iPad 4, Microsoft's Surface RT, Amazon's Kindle Fire HD, Google's Nexus 7 and Samsung's Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 were tested 50 times for Agawi to get average touch latency figures.

Hardware and software experts say that Apple's devices are deemed more responsive because of the company's integrated approach to software and hardware. Android device manufacturers may have hardware experts of their own but they will still have to work with the Android software of Google.

Based on Agawi's chart, Nvidia has an edge over other tablets in the market excluding Apple. Nvidia developed Direct Touch technology for its tablets which transfers touch processing to a CPU core, therby improving response times.

Microsoft is not known as a hardware company but it designed the Surface devices' hardware and software including their touch integration.

Amazon's Kindle Fire HD has a more responsive touchscreen that the Nexus 7 and the Galaxy Tab 3 based on Agawi's benchmark tests. However, Microsoft's Surface RT tablet still outshines the commercial Android tablets.

The responsiveness of the tablet screen will be most noticeable to users when playing games or typing since these actions required the screen to respond quickly to touch.

Agawi co-founder and chief executive Rohan Relan said users can test their tablets in games like Fruit Ninja wherein a player will try to "slice" flying fruit as they are hurled in the air. Apparently, Apple's iPad mini and iPad 4 slice fruits quicker than other tablets.

Agawi measured the minimum app response time (MART) to determine which tablet has the most responsive screen. The iPad mini has an MART of 75 milliseconds compared to the Surface RT's 97 milliseconds.

The Kindle Fire HD was clocked at 114 milliseconds while the 2013 version of the Google's Nexus 7 lagged at 135 milliseconds. Samsung's Galaxy Tab 3 is at the bottom of the list with 168 milliseconds.
