Although in terms of overall brand, the Android market share is larger than iOS, in several markets, Apple beats out its competition, particularly Samsung. How do the companies stake up in the home markets? Both are clear leaders in their home market. Samsung, however, has a clear edge over Apple in South Korea, much more that Apple has over Samsung in the U.S. market.

It is not so in Samsung's home market, South Korea where Samsung is the clear leader holding 60 per cent of the market share. Here Apple is trailing far below with a 14 per cent share of the South Korean market. Its only relief, it has a share higher than another South Korean brand, Pantech. Even LG is one notch above Apple.

According to market data released by analytics firm Flurry, which notes that this trend in South Korea could be reflective of the emerging market conditions in more countries, as the smartphone market begins to saturate.

"As such, it provides a good early indicator of what other markets can expect once the rapid growth period the mobile market has experienced over the past few years ends," says the Flurry report quoted by Ubergizmo.

Interestingly, although Samsung dominated the South Korean market, Apple has an edge over its rival in customer satisfaction. It essentially means, a larger number of customers of Apple are satisfied with their product. With word-of-mouth being a good medium of publicity, it needs to be seen how the market share will shift in the coming months.

In the U.S. smartphone market, meanwhile, iPhone has helped Apple maintain its number one spot. Figures released by comScore Mobilens and Mobile Matrix in Sept indicated that Apple has not only sustained itself but also increased in market share by 1.2 per cent to reach 40.4 per cent, over the quarter ending April 2013.

According to the Apple Insider, Samsung too has seen growth in the U.S. smartphone market. It garnered growth of 2.1 per cent and rose to 24. 1 per cent over the April 2013 quarter ending score of 22.0 per cent.

Interestingly both the smartphone giants have made their gains eating into the market share of HTC (down 0.9 per cent) and Motorola (down 1.4 per cent). LG meanwhile grew by 0.1 per cent to reach 6.8 per cent market share.
