Apple iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 Release Date Delay Possible over iOS 7 Overhaul?
Apple iPhone 5S release date will fall within end-2013, perhaps by late Q3 or early Q4, according to various rumours online. These rumours have somewhat been corroborated by Apple CEO Tim Cook, who recently dismissed talks about a June release for the next iPhone.
Meanwhile, an extensive analysis reported by Bloomberg seems to hint of a further delay for iPhone 6, assuming it will come with iOS 7. Apparently, iOS 7 is going to be very different, and much work still has to be done to accomplish this.
Citing unnamed sources, Bloomberg reported Jonathan Ive, Senior Vice President of Industrial Design at Apple, is working on a major revamp of the company's mobile operating system.
Ive "has begun revamping iPhone and iPad applications, shunning realistic images, such as wood bookshelves for the Newsstand feature," says the report. This could mean that future iPhone 5S or iPhone 6 users are in for a whole new look and feel of the Apple smartphone. Ive is reportedly "exploring more dramatic changes" for iOS 7.
Some rumours indicate that the iPhone 5S will be known as a budget Apple smartphone. This could also be a transition phone as Apple preps iOS 7 for its users. Apple sleuths who have pointed out a 2014 release for iPhone 6 may be on to something. How different could the iOS 7 be?
"Word on the street is that iOS engineers with carry privileges all have some sort of polarizing filter on their iPhone displays, such that it greatly decreases viewing angles, thus making it difficult for observers to see the apparently rather significant system-wide UI overhaul," reports Daring Fireball.
Apple is under great pressure now that super Android phones from HTC (One) and Samsung (Galaxy S4) have introduced more features unavailable in iOS smartphones. HTC, an Android beauty, is especially being lauded for its aversion to the "cheap plastic feel" that Android critics hated.
Assuming Apple won't be interested in releasing iPhone 6 until the iOS 7 revamp is completed, then perhaps there is some truth to the rumours that there won't be an iPhone 6 this year. But smartphone shoppers could still hope for an iPhone 5S holiday release.
"Our teams are hard at work on some amazing new hardware, software, and services that we can't wait to introduce this fall and throughout 2014," Cook was quoted as saying at Apple's recent earnings call with investors, press and analysts. If iPhone is somewhere between the said lines, then there could only be minor tweaks this fall. The iPhone 5S could be the last iPhone to be released in a 2007 build and form. Perhaps eager Apple smartphone users should now update their shopping calendar.
