Apple Is Killing Personal Computers: iPhones Dominate the Charts Plus More iPhone 6s Insane Features
Personal computers have been on a precarious position following the onslaught of smartphones, ultrabooks and tablets. Now, the continuous release of Apple's iPhone products (iPhone 6 and iPhone Plus for example) may be further hurting the computer industry. According to the latest stats, the total market for more mobile devices like smartphones, tablets plus 2-in-1s, and PCs will grow to 2.5 billion from 1.8 billion units. However, those figures set to be reached by 2019 will be dominated heavily by smartphones.
The sale of iPhones could dwarf personal computers and tablets in the long run according to a new report from IDC. Back in 2010, PCs still accounted for the majority of the total smart connected device market. That is when notebook and desktop categories accounted for 52.5 percent of the shipments against the 44.7 percent smartphone shipments and 2.8 percent tablet shipments. However, come 2014, smartphone shipments grew to 73.4 percent whereas PCs suffered a major decline to 16.8 percent. Tablets increased to 12.5 percent. IDC experts predict that by 2019, smartphones should be up at 77.8 percent, PCs at 11.6 percent and tablets at 10.7 percent.
Program Vice President for Devices at IDC, Tom Mainelli, suggests: Smartphone growth continues at an astounding pace, while growth in the PC and tablet markets is proving to be more challenging. There are clearly some bright spots in both markets." These bright spots include 2-in-1s and converitible notebooks.
Senior Research Manager for Mobile Devices, Melissa Chau, offers: "Not all smartphone growth will be equal. Going forward, the future of smartphones lies in emerging markets, sub-US$100 price points, and phablets."
As with recent expectations, the smartphone market may grow even more interesting with the hype over the iPhone 6s growing. The Motley Fool points two forecasts about the device that people should watch out: the Force Touch and the pink version. As the Force Touch was included in the Apple Watch to enhance user experience, its inclusion in the iPhone may also complement the iPhone user experience. The pink version is simply historical if pushed because Apple has never offered a pink smartphone edition before.
