Apple Releases MacBook Air Flash Storage Firmware Update: Fix Your Data Loss or Exchange Your MacBook Air
Apple recently released their MacBook Air Flash Storage Firmware Update 1.1 to fix data loss and similar problems for mid-2012 MacBook Air. The update looks for issues resulting to data loss specifically for the 64 and 128GB models.
In many cases, the update will only install the latest firmware to solve problems. However, for some, they may need to request to replace the drive. Apple is replacing the drives for free. The company has also issued an announcement recalling a number of MacBook Air models from last year.
Apple recommends the update for mid-2012 MacBook Air models.
The recall program was announced when Apple discovered a part of the flash storage drives found on MacBook Air models leading to data loss. As mentioned, the update evaluates the drive and in most cases installs the latest firmware to address the problem. If the drive fails to update then Apple will recall the drive for free.
The firmware can be downloaded from the Mac App store. People can also access the update from the Apple Support site. To check if the drive is affected, proceed to Mac App Store, click Updates and select MacBook Air Flash Storage Firmware Update 1.1.
Apple also started the Flash Storage Drive Replacement Program. This details how users can replace their faulty drive. Those using affected MacBook Air models will be directed to a page following firmware installation. Affected models include those sold from June 2012 to June 2013.
Accroding to Apple, an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) will provide the free storage replacement. Users directed to Apple's web page following firmware update should proceed to Replacement Process section to get their drives exchanged.
The tech giant strongly recommend that affected users do not install any updates on their operating system. Creating data backup is also crucial. As much as possible, Apple encourages people to schedule data backup regularly until the company has replaced the drive.
People can set up an appointment through Apple Retail Store or they can search for an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The company also recommends contacting Apple Technical Support to find out about local service options. Data backup is important before users head out for this MacBook Air service.
People can reinstall their original operating system version through the Mac App Store. The recall program does not include the MacBook Air's standard warranty coverage. The program offers three years coverage from the initial retail sale of the MacBook Air unit.
