Software developers attending the Worldwide Development Conference (WWDC) at Moscone West Convention Center, San Francisco, Calif. could not contain their excitement. They turned to Twitter to express their thoughts after Apple's surprise revelation of a new programming language for iOS and OS X development called Swift.

Craig Federighi, Apple senior vice president of software engineering, cited the new programming language totally rules.

"Swift is fast, it is modern, it is designed for safety, and it enables a lot of interactivity in development that you never see on a platform," he said.

The company revealed the Objective C programming language, which Apple has been using for the past 20 years is 2.8 times better with Python in terms of complex object sort. Even so, the new programming language that Apple revealed is still 3.9 times faster than Objective C.

In terms of RC4 encryption, Apple noted Swift is 220 times better compared with Objective C, which is only at 127 times.

Apple also noted about the modern features of Swift such as generics, closures, namespaces, multiple return types and type interface.

Developers who watched the keynote address clapped to their heart's content upon knowing Swift can remove the entire categories of common programming errors that beset the codes and remove the programming clutters making it easier for developers to use.

What makes developers even more excited is Apple's announcement that Swift co-exist with the older language in Objective C in the same application despite Swift will eventually replace Objective C. SVP Federighi said Swift is native to cocoa and coco touch.

The new programming language is built with the same LLVM compiler, optimizer and autovectorizer, ARC memory management model and similar runtime as the old programming language.

Developers who have attended the WWDC keynote then turned to Twitter to express their ecstatic reaction over the new development.

One user @brennanMKE said, "It could not be done, but Swift can divide by zero. Well done Apple."

Another user @raboof noted, "Pleasantly surprised to see Apple's #swift embracing discriminated unions http://goo.gl/i70O2U & pattern matching http://goo.gl/Aoyj87."

Still another user @AboJoe took time to read the programming guide for Swift which is already available on iTunes. He said Swift is the answer to life, to universe and everything.
