Google and Apple may have to compete with another challenger as Archos released its 101 XS 2. As the market fills up with slates for the holidays, which ones should consumers really consider? A look at the specs of offerings from Archos, Google, Asus and Apple should make it easier for consumers to choose.

Archos 101 XS 2

The Archos 101 XS 2 offers a sleek design. While the tablet may not sport high-end or premium features, it has enough specs to allow average users to complete their daily tasks. Far from the first generation, Archos made sure its second generation is a truly improved version. The device runs on a quad-core processor clocked at 1.6 GHz with 2 GB RAM. With an affordable price and stylish design, consumers can get a good deal out of the 101 XS 2.

Features include a front-facing dual stereo speakers, Archos Coverboard and dual-band Wi-Fi. The Coverboard acts as a keyboard, screen protector and charging station. The keyboard makes it easier for users to input information onto the tablet. If not in use, the Coverboard serves as a docking and charging station offering more functionality.

The device comes with pre-installed OfficeSuite Pro 6. The software package is ideal in managing and creating Excel, Word, PowerPoint and PDF files. The Archos 101 XS 2 features a 10.1-inch IPS screen. It provides 1,280 x 800 pixel widescreen resolution, assuring users of excellent viewing experience. Some sources agree that Archos 101 XS 2 can be a potential replacement for ASUS Transformer Book for those working with a budget.

ASUS Transformer Book T100

The Transformer Book T100 features 10-inch screen IPS display and runs on the latest Windows 8.1. It comes with a detachable keyboard allowing users to transform it into a laptop, if needed. The slate may not have the best premium features, but it is flexible enough to be a tablet and a notebook. The device is capable enough to cater to the needs of the average user.

Thanks to its OS and Intel Bay Trail processor, the ASUS Transformer Book T100 combines the functionality of a tablet and desktop. The Bay Trail chips perform twice as fast as the previous Atom processors. Users can also expect an improvement in the graphics performance of the slate. Bay Trail chips also do not consume as much energy, extending battery life up to almost a full day.

The ASUS Transformer Book T100 also packs 2 GB RAM and 31 Whr battery. It has a 1.2-MP front camera but no rear camera. Buyers can choose from two storage options: 32 or 64 GB of storage. The 64 GB model offers a total of 30 GB to media, other files and apps.

Google Nexus 10 2

Although the Google Nexus 10 2 has not officially entered the market yet, there are reports indicating that Google will release the device by Nov 21. While waiting for that to happen, here are the rumoured specs of the device:

  • OS: Android 4.4 KitKat
  • Screen: Super PLS 10.1 in (2,560 x 1,600, 299ppi), Corning Gorilla Glass 3
  • Processor: 2.3 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 or nVidia Tegra 4
  • GPU: Adreno 330 (if CPU is Qualcomm)
  • Storage: Up to 32 GB (no microSD)

  • Cameras: 8 Mp rear, 2.1 Mp front
  • Connectivity: dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, dual-side NFC, microUSB

The main selling point of the Google Nexus 10 is the integration of Android 4.4 KitKat. Google made sure the OS update brings users closer to a true Android experience. The digital assistant, Google Now, is also more responsive and functional as seen on the Nexus 5.

iPad Air

It looks like Apple could be moving more into the hybrid market. The iPad Air seems to indicate the company's venture into combining the capabilities of its product lines. The device runs with A7 and M7 processor chips ensuring fast and reliable performance. Imagine working with a MacBook in a slate format - that's what the iPad Air offers on the table.

The iPad Air features a 9.7-inch capacitive touchscreen with 1,536 x 2,048 pixel resolution and ~264 ppi density, LED-backlit IPS LCD and 16M colors as well as scratch-resistant glass and oleophobic coating. It offers four storage configurations, 16, 32, 64 and 128 GB, and 1 GB RAM DDR3. Running the device is an Apple A7 dual-core 1.3 GHz Cyclone (ARM v8-based) and PowerVR G6430 (quad-core graphics).

The iPad Air remains the tablet with premium features, but the ASUS Transformer Pad and Archos 101 XS 2 are not bad alternatives for those with limited budget.
