Australian bank hacked or technical glitch?
Hackers in the past two months, Sony Corp.'s PlayStation Network and other gaming sites, the U.S. Senate's Web Site, and Citigroup, Google's Gmail, among other sites. Citigroup has been forced to send replacement cards to customers after accounts of 1% of its 21 million North American card customers were hacked.
Today, hundreds of Commonwealth Bank customers were unable to access their accounts, complete bill payments, transfers, and international money transfers.
However, it was not a hacking attack, basing from initial statements by Commonwealth Bank. The bank said a technical error interrupted its online banking services.
A statement posted at the bank's NetBank site this evening says: " Sorry! NetBank should be working but something appears to have gone wrong. Bear with us while we investigate and resolve the issue. If you need to make a payment to an account or biller saved in your address book, please use www.netbank.com.au/mobile"
In March, the Commonwealth was hit by a computer glitch that let people withdraw more cash from ATMs than they had in their accounts.
Other big banks in Australia have suffered systems outages in recent months. National Australia Bank has been experiencing two payments processing failutes since November.
