Samsung Galaxy Note 2 users in Australia could receive the 4.4.2 version of Android Kitkat OS update this month, as carriers plan to roll out the update soon.

GottaBeMobile reported Vodafone plans to release the Android 4.4 Kitkat update to its Galaxy Note 2 handsets in late April or May. However, the report also said the carrier has not received the update from Samsung for testing, so the roll out may be delayed.

Another Australian carrier, Optus, said it has not received the firmware yet. However, it claimed it plans to release the update for its devices in June. Carriers do not usually supply its users with a concrete release date because of the unpredictable testing process.

It was expected the 4.4 Kitkat update release will be gradual. Users do not need to panic if they have not received a notification, as they can manually check their handsets by going to the Settings > About Phone and see if they have a notification for the OS update.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 owners in Europe, specifically in France, started receiving the update last week. The update started rolling out in India as well. It is expected the rest of the world will follow suit.

Android Origin reported not all Samsung Galaxy Note 2 models will receive an update. International GT-N7100; China Unicom Gt-N7102; International GT-N7105; China Mobile GT-N7108; Verizon SCH-i605; US Cellular SCH-R950; AT&T SGH-i317; Bell, Rogers, SaskTel and Telus SGH-i317M; T-Mobile SGH-T889; Mobilicity, Videotron and WIND SGH-T889V; Sprint SPH-L900; China Telecom SCH-N719; NTT DoCoMo SGH-N025; KT SHV-E250K; LG U+ SHV-E250L and SK Telecom SHV-E250S are some of the Galaxy Note 2 models that will get an upgrade.

In addition, not all Galaxy Note 2 users will be able to update their device in May. The report adds Samsung will have to send the 4.4.2 Kitkat update to the networks for certification. How fast the update will be released to users depends on the carriers, which could take quite a while for some.

SamMobile claimed the latest firmware will bring in improvements and tweaks both from Android and Samsung combined. These are:

  • Camera shortcut on the lock screen
  • Wireless printing support
  • NFC tap-to-pay
  • Options to set default messaging and launcher apps and more stable OS
  • Samsung KNOX support for secured communication
  • Samsung Wallet.
