Two Australian were killed in the Germanwings flight 4U9525 crash in southern France. The deceased have been identified as Carol Friday and her son Greig Friday.

The mother-son duo from Melbourne was among the 150 killed in the deadly plane crash in the French Alps. According to officials, it may take several days to recover bodies as the crash site is situated in an inaccessible mountainous terrain. The situation is worsened due to severe weather.

It was Foreign Minister Julie Bishop who confirmed that the two Australians were among the passengers killed in the crash. She released their names during the Question Time in Federal Parliament. She read parts of a statement which the Friday family had issued through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

The statement says that the family is “crippled with sadness” and requests privacy. According to the statement, Carol was a loving mother of two, a devoted wife and a sister to three brothers. She turned 68 on Mar. 23 while his son was going to celebrate his 30th birthday on Apr. 23. Caron, 68, was a nurse while her 29-year-old son was an engineer. They went for a holiday in Europe and were travelling to Dusseldorf from Barcelona in the plane.

The statement also says that Greig was a loving son and an exceptional brother to his sister. He was going to stay in Europe as he was supposed to start teaching English there. Both the mother and the son are described as “extraordinary and exceptional people” in the statement.

Greig was a former Monash University student. He later joined Jacobs Engineering in Melbourne as a graduate acoustic engineer. Sarah Alper, his manager at Jacobs, said that it was devastating. "He was a lovely person, it sounds contrived, but he really was a genuinely lovely person and the workplace was better for having him a part of it," Alper said, "When he left to pursue an adventure, we were really sad to see him go and hoped one day he would come back.”

Carol’s brother Mal Coram used Facebook to pay tribute to his sister. He wrote that her sister was his travel partner for 40 years and was a great mate. He also wrote that his nephew was a “beautiful man” and was his Godson. He said that it was the saddest day of his life.
