Australia consumers may be tech savvy and may own multiple digital devices, yet most of them still fail to give their gadgets the ample, if not best, security it needs, a survey from McAfee said.

McAfee in its survey found that at least 27 percent of Australian internet users own at least five devices, while 64 percent own at least three, but a chunkful 38 percent of those combined do not bother to properly secure their devices. McAfee said Australian consumers have digital assets worth an average of at least $21,000.

Those who do not protect their devices include gadgets such as PCs, netbooks, tablets and smartphones.

Of the 221 Australian respondents who participated in the survey, aged 18 to 74 years old, 32 percent cited cost as reason for not buying security software, although 95 percent of them acknowledged the need and importance of securing and protecting digital devices, including photo libraries, personal information and entertainment files.

The same survey also showed that 82 percent of Australians consider losing their smartphone worse than their wallet.

"We have to address the fact that there is more data and information to lose when someone misplaces their smartphone," Monica Kelly, McAfee ANZ small business and mobile director, said during the launch on Tuesday of the McAfee's new All Access suite.

"The devices may be coming down in price but they are still an expensive device as more consumers would like to get that data back if they lose it," she added.

McAfee's new All Access suite is a cross-device software suite that is currently the first to offer security for most of a household's Internet-supported devices. It offers protection against malware, hackers, theft, inappropriate content for children and more for a household's smartphones, tablets, netbooks, PCs and Macs - but not for iPhones or iPads.

The suite includes anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-phishing tools, two-way firewalls, anti-spam tools, home network protection, location tracking for Android, Symbian and Blackberry phones and tablets, remote lock and wipe features and back-up and restore options.
