Ban on Use of Facebook, Mobile Phone Leads 17-Year-Old Indian Girl to Hang Self
Social networking was so important to 17-year-old Aishwarya Dahiwal from Maharashtra, India, that when her parents prevented her from using her mobile phone and accessing Facebook, she hanged herself on Wednesday night.
Her suicide was preceded by an argument with her parents over spending too much time on Facebook which could affect her studies. She is a college student.
GH Lemgude from the Nanalpeth police station in Parbhani, said, quoted by India TV News, "Like all parents, their intentions were only to ensure that the girl did not go astray. They advised her to concentrate on her studies and stay away from long mobile chats and social networking sites.
In her suicide note, Aishwarya wrote, "Is Facebook so bad? I cannot stay in a home with such restrictions as I can't live without Facebook."
Her parents and two brothers are still in shock over the incident.
This is not the first time that young people have committed suicide linked to their Facebook use, but most of them are due to cyber bullying.
