After being announced last month via Gamespot, Swedish developer Fat Shark Games has released the first trailer for the upcoming “Warhammer: End Times Vermintide” game. The title will be a co-op focused first-person shooter that adds melee combat elements, similar to the popular “Left 4 Dead” games.

Set in the “End Times” of the Warhammer universe, players will get to choose between five unique heroes and, as the title implies, fight giant rat-like enemies that are attacking the city of Ubersreik. These enemies have appeared in the Warhammer lore before and are called the Skaven, though they also go by the name Ratmen.

Eurogamer has pointed out that the gameplay is very similar to “Left 4 Dead.” Players can team up with their friends in four-player co-op and take on the Skaven together. There will also be various Skaven types in the game to fight, similarly to the various zombie types in “Left for Dead” and each level gets capped off with an exciting finale.

The parallels to the game appear to be intentional. One of the game designers named Victor Magnuson told PC Gamer that the goal was to create a game in the sub-genre that “Left 4 Dead” has popularised. Magnuson also stressed that teamwork is extremely necessary in the game as it is very difficult for ayone to take on the Skaven alone.

However, despite taking some inspiration from “Left 4 Dead,” the game does have some unique features that separate it from the zombie title, particularly the Skaven themselves. Unlike zombies, the Skaven will be able to carry weapons with them, ensuring a harder task for players of the game.

The trailer seen below was reported by Gamespot to be pre-alpha footage. The game could look different or have newer features once the game actually comes out. Apparently dismemberment of the Skaven’s body parts will be implemented in the final game and players can even cut off their tails for fun.

“Warhammer: End Times Vermintide” is set to come out for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. No official release date has been given, though it will apparently come out sometime in the second half of 2015.
