BlackBerry Passport Initial Reports Positive, BlackBerry To Launch Several Unconventional Devices In The Future
Yesterday, IBTimes reported that the BlackBerry Passport had reached 200,000 preorders within six hours on Amazon.com after its launch on Sept 24. Now that the BlackBerry Passport has garnered positive results for the company, Ron Louks, head of Blackberry's devices group, has revealed through an interview with Reuters that they are planning to launch unconventional smartphones in the near future.
The BlackBerry sports a huge square-shaped display with three rows of QWERTY keyboard. When PhoneArena showed leaked images of BlackBerry Passport in February, many commented negatively about the handset. Some of the comments are it's the "ugliest phone," "it's so boxy," "wow that is ugly" and more. However, the initial reports for BlackBerry Passport seem to be very positive for the company.
Louks said in the same interview that the quarterly performance is steadily improving, and because of that they will be able to risk launching unconventional handsets once a year. According to Reuters, BlackBerry is already working on another unorthodox device. Louks says that the device, which is currently under wraps, has received positive response from its carriers.
The BlackBerry Passport has an offbeat appeal. Its features such as the square-shaped display, larger battery with a capacity of 3450 mAh and touch-sensitive QWERTY keyboard have been praised by tech sites. However, one of the most common negative feedback on BlackBerry Passport is users find it difficult to use the device with just one hand, according to Reuters.
In the interview, Louks said that he feels that the demand for BlackBerry Passport will surpass their expectations. Louks hinted that a prototype of the device is under construction. The device is expected to be easier to operate with one hand. PhoneArena also reported in the past week that BlackBerry's CEO Jon Chen is planning to manufacture a second gen BlackBerry Passport.
Chen also said that in the month of November, they will be launching BlackBerry Classic, which looks like the BlackBerry Bold 9900. It is going to feature a physical QWERTY keyboard along with a track pad and function keys. He even added that BlackBerry will be showcasing new devices during the MWC 2015, which will be held in Barcelona in March 2015.
