Bob Arum On Mayweather-Pacquiao Fight: ‘We’re Going To Win This Fight’
Only one fighter is going to come out as the winner in the mega-buck showdown between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. It is not a surprise that Top Rank chief Bob Arum is betting on his fighter, the Filipino eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao, to win the fight. The veteran promoter is certain that Pacquiao will hand Mayweather his first-ever defeat.
“I want to assure everybody in the Philippines that we’re going to win this fight,” Arum told The Star over the phone. “It’s been a long time coming, but we got the fight done and I’m personally very, very happy and particularly happy for Manny Pacquiao.”
Arum added that Pacquiao is going to “win decisively and establish himself without any question as the greatest fighter in the world.” According to Arum, Pacquiao will win either via stoppage or decision.
In a series of tweets posted on Top Rank’s official account on Twitter, Arum has already stressed his assurance that Pacquiao will be declared as the winner in the Mayweather fight. Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach also reportedly said that the undefeated American fighter should relish every moment of his 47-fight winning streak because Mayweather will soon become acquainted with the frustration of defeat.
The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight is a historic event akin to Super Bowls played in the last five or six years wrapped up in a single event, Arum said during another interview with Philippine news outlet ABS-CBN. He harked back to the time when the fight was first talked about in 2009, particularly all stumbling blocks that prevented the fight from taking place. Arum said that the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight will be the biggest event in the history of boxing in recent years.
Arum also revealed Pacquiao’s training schedule for the fight. The Filipino boxing icon is slated to formally begin his training on March 9 in Los Angeles, which gives Pacquiao at least a couple of months to prepare for the fight. Arum believes that it would be enough for Pacquiao to be in top condition for his May 2 clash with Mayweather at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.
