The 2014 Samsung flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Note, will likely show off new display panels that is akin to the Retina screen found on iPhone 5S plus they will be cheaper too, according to new reports.

Fresh speculations coming from South Korea, Samsung's home base, indicated that for its future high-end smartphone line, the Galaxy maker could be ditching its signature AMOLED screen in favour of a Retina-class PLS LCD.

According to Patently Apple, a Samsung Display plant is set to ramp up its production of PLS panels by 2014 with a target to rollout some 20 million PL LCDs for Galaxy smartphones, which likely will be used on the supposed Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 successors.

But what is notable about the imminent migration from AMOLED display panel is the likelihood that "Samsung Electronics will be able to reduce the display cost by approximately 20 per cent," Patently Apple said on its report.

With that, the possibility emerges that the premium phones GS5 and the Note 4 will retail at relatively lower prices compared to their predecessors. Such scenario is supported by earlier reports that Samsung is seriously considering a major shift on its mobile device business model.

Following the pattern of Google's Nexus devices, the Asian tech giant will reportedly release more affordable handsets, which will be company's way of addressing the increasingly saturate upscale smartphone market.

The jump from AMOLED to PLC LCD, however, will not mean that future Galaxy handsets will have mediocre specs and features. Like the Nexus 5, the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 will be packaged as powerful devices with reasonable price tags.

But as expected, the actual retail price will not be as low as Google offers with its Nexus line of devices.

Also, AMOLED will not totally exit from the Samsung Galaxy ecosystem. Majority of Galaxy smartphone builds, which come in various models - from entry-level to mid-range, will still sport the display panel that is now a popular Samsung imprint.

It should be noted too that Samsung has declared earlier that it plans to issue Galaxy tablets in 2014 that bear the AMOLED display panel.

There was no mention on the report by Patently Apple on when exactly can consumers expect the PLS LCD-laced Galaxy smartphone.

Analysts, however, are expecting the Galaxy S5 to come out as early as February 2014 while the Galaxy Note 4 release date is more likely set for late Q3 2014.
