Is a Cheaper Moto X on the Way? Speculation About a Mini Moto X
Motorola will be announcing more products in the coming months aimed at the price sensitive consumers.
The price range can be expected to be bellow US$200 because the CEO Dennis Woodside highlighted the fact that there are many consumers who are looking for a smartphone priced at below $200 but often have to forsake key features and performance as a compromise to the lower cost. Motorola is set to address this issue, according to reports from CNET.
Speculation is rife that Apple will be launching a cheaper iPhone5C, on Sept 10. If this news is true, it could mean a renewed price war in the smartphone market and competitors will be wise to be ready to handle any downward spiral of the sales with a cheaper smartphone of their own.
Samsung has been actively trying to price its products competitively and already has the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini and Nokia is seeing better sales with its Lumia line of products like Lumia 520 and 521.
Smartphones have always been on the news for the technological breakthroughs, but that does not necessarily translate into sales if the price tags are too high. The emerging markets especially tend to be highly price sensitive and many of the big names in the smartphone markets are seeing smaller profit margins.
Motorola's best bet is to come up with a Moto X "lite", given the extensive marketing done for the product and the name recognition it has in consumer's minds.
That would still be a challenge however because the most striking feature of the Moto X is not the faster hardware but the voice recognition software, the phone if expected to recognize the user's voice over the others' in the background and respond without the user having to touch the phone.
It will be challenge to provide this feature even to a limited degree without compromising on the hardware. This could give rise to performance issues including lag. If the voice feature is abandoned then it will lose its appeal.
A lot of it depends on the price and features of the new cheaper iPhone, competitors and analysts will watch the Sept 10 event with a keen eye.
