David Bowie cremated secretly in New York shortly after his death
The news of legendary singer David Bowie’s death on Jan. 10 shook the world. While his fans and followers were waiting to pay their tributes to Bowie for one last time at his memorial service, the singer was cremated secretly in New York.
Bowie breathed his last a few days back as he succumbed to liver cancer at the age of 69. The legend was apparently well aware of his fast-approaching end as he was diagnosed with cancer about 18 months ago and this made him tell his wife about his last wish which was “no memorial.” Following the instructions by Bowie, his wife Imam secretly cremated him without the presence of any of his family or friends.
This has shattered the hopes of his fans to attend the singer’s funeral service or public memorial. A report by Mirror has revealed that Bowie wanted to “go without any fuss” and without a funeral service or public memorial.
“There is no public or private service or a public memorial. There is nothing,” the website quoted a source. It has also been revealed that Bowie’s body was quietly cremated shortly after he died.
“In many respects you don’t need a memorial or service to remember David by ... you have his music instead. He would have wanted to just disappear with no fuss, no big show, no fan-fare. This would totally be his style. His last album Blackstar was very much his goodbye to fans instead,” the website quoted another source.
Bowie is survived by his wife Iman and their daughter Alexandria. It has been reported that the family visited Bowie’s London birthplace for a nostalgic trip to visit his childhood homes during his illness.
Bowie’s followers, including the bigwigs of the music industry, have been posting their condolences after his death on social networking sites.
Mick Jagger too took to Facebook to post an old picture of Bowie. “David reading to school children in Mustique,” read the caption of his post.
