"Destiny" has reportedly proven to be a success among console gamers. The multiplayer sci-fi video game has gained so much popularity with online gamers since its launch on Sept. 9. Apparently, its success had developers already planning a sequel with a "Lord of the Rings-Sized narrative" in mind.

CEO of Activision Publishing Eric Hirshberg reportedly revealed during a post-earnings financial call that development of a "Destiny" sequel has started. Polygon quoted Hirshberg on his statement about the game's franchise. "Work has also begun on future expansion packs, as well as on our next full game release," he said. He also said that Activision is pleased with Destiny's launch and will continue to support Bungie.

It's reportedly not surprising that "Destiny" would have its sequel. After all, Gamespot claimed Bungie has signed on a 10-year exclusive publishing deal with Activision back in 2010. Bungie signed on for "Destiny" to become a franchise. The extent of the game was even compared with the "Lord of the Rings" movie franchise. Eric Hirshberg once told Wired that "Bungie aren't just thinking about the content that goes on the first disc; they're thinking about a 10-year story." During the interview about the game's origins, Hirshberg claimed the sequel could have a "Lord of the Rings-sized narrative."

Additionally, Gamespot claimed "Destiny" was really meant to be given a sequel. Contract deals from 2012 reportedly revealed Activision and Bungie had signed on for multiple sequels for the franchise. However, Activision didn't release further details about its development, such as its content or release date.

An Activision representative also declined to comment on the sequel when asked by Gamespot. There's reportedly nothing to announce at this time. The spokesperson only affirmed that Activision is looking forward to expanding the "Destiny" universe with Bungie over the course of its 10-year agrement with the developers.

Apparently, details on the "Destiny" sequel are still pending either Bungie or Activision's announcement. In the meantime, players are anticipating the release of the game's first expansion. Exciting contents are said to be featured in "The Dark Below" expansion, which will be released on Dec. 9. The DLC supposedly marks the beginning of Bungie's post-release plans for the franchise.
