‘Destiny’ v. 'Halo,' Full Map With Activities And PS4 Plans Revealed
"Destiny" is already out for the PS4, PS3, Xbox One and Xbox 360, and there are already mixed reviews about the title. But even with the spread of what appears to be a more negatively skewed reception, this does not change the fact that apart from being the most preordered IP, "Destiny" enjoyed a celebrated first day sales achievement.
The reported revenue for "Destiny" amounts to $500 million, and according to Bloomberg, this is the strong start that the IP needs, especially for a game of its genre. According to the report, "Destiny" is looking at 40% of its sales on its first five days upon release alone, and considering that Activision has spent millions in advertising and marketing the brand, the company also expects a pretty high return.
The developer and publisher have high hopes for the franchise. Considering the number of beta testers and first-day sales that they have achieved, and with more post-launch content expected to debut, it appears that the launch was just the start for "Destiny."
"We're really proud of the world we created with 'Halo' and the millions of gamers we attracted, but with 'Destiny,' we wanted the worlds to be bigger and feel more alive," Bungie's COO Pete Parsons said in an interview quoted by Business Insider.
10-Year Lifespan and the PS4's Big Break?
When talking about the future of "Destiny," the developer has made it clear that they are not aiming for a one-time launched title. In fact, Gameskinny reports that the developers' target is a 10-year cycle for the franchise.
Given this background, it seems that one company is trying to make the most out of the situation by taking advantage of the incentives that are posed early on. According to the report, this is how Sony is aiming to boost its own next-gen console--by getting "Destiny" fans early onto the PlayStation platforms.
Considering that Bungie and Activision are aiming to make "Destiny" bigger than "Halo," there's a big chance that Sony wants to make "Destiny" what "Halo" has been for Microsoft. With the success that the franchise is pulling so far, that idea may not be such a long shot.
