Production details for the film adaptation of the Marvel comics “Doctor Strange” have so far been scarce. Movie director Scott Derrickson had previously tweeted that filming will be taking place in London. Kevin Feige recently confirmed Derrickson’s tweet and also shared some details about the adaptation, where he described the film’s version of the Ancient One.

Kevin Feige briefly talked about “Doctor Strange” during the recent press junket for “Ant-Man” on Saturday, June 27. Devin Faraci from Birth.Movies.Death asked whether Doctor Stephen Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum will be located in NYC’s Greenwich Village, much like in the comics. Feige revealed that the Sorcerer Supreme’s Sanctum will be on Bleeker Street, the modern day Bleeker Street. The character will reportedly be the “strangest thing walking out onto that street.”

Casting for the Ancient One, Doctor Strange’s mentor in the comics and consequently in the film, has given the studio more leeway. In the press junket, Kevin Feige also described the film’s version of the Ancient One. “As we were developing this film we looked at The Ancient One as a mantle more than a specific person,” he explained.

“The sorcerers have been around for millennia, protecting us from things we didn’t know about until this story. There have been multiple [Ancient Ones], even if this one has been around for five hundred years, there were others. This is a mantle, and therefore felt we had leeway to cast in interesting ways,” Feige added.

Actress Tilda Swinton has been rumoured to play as the Ancient One in “Doctor Strange.” In the comics, the character is actually male. But according to the Hollywood Reporter, Marvel had rethought the casting and decided to let a woman portray the role. Portraying the role of a male character in “Doctor Strange” would not be a first for the actress. She once played as the angel Gabriel in the 2005 movie adaptation of DC’s “Constantine.”

In the same “Ant-Man” press junket, Kevin Feige also revealed that “Doctor Strange” will still take some inspiration from Stan Lee’s comics. The film adaptation will reportedly still contain a bit of the “phony Tibetan mysticism” that Lee used in his stories.
