Inquisitor of the "Dragon Age Inquisition" can recruit up to eight companions to join the Inquisition in Thedas. Each companion has unique skills, storyline, interactions, side quests and romance restrictions unlockable by the player.

Blackwall: The Grey Warden

Blackwall will become available in the Hinterlands after Leliana gives the Inquisitor the "The Lone Warden" quest. Blackwall is seen in Hinterlands training a group of conscripts to fight off bandits and converses the Inquisitor after the encounter. Blackwall can stay or leave the party depending on the Inquisitor's decisions in Val Royeaux and his approval rating.

Cole: Hedge Mage Of The White Spire Circle Of Magi

Cole will join the Inquisition no matter which side the Inquisitor supports -- mages or Templars. Cole is an optional companion that cannot be acquired during early gameplay and won't be missed by the Inquisitor according to the storyline. Cole's personal event involves a decision-making with the Inquisitor, Solas and Varric on confronting a Templar.

Dorian Pavus: Mage Of Tevinter Imperium

Dorian will become available in Redcliffe after Fiona requests for the Herald to meet with a faction of mages. Dorian will asks the Inquisitor to help on sealing a Fade rift during the first encounter in Redcliffe. After that, Dorian will introduce himself and reveals allegiance of Alexius to the Venatori.

Iron Bull: Qunari Mercenary With A Single Eye

Single-eyed Qunari mercenary Iron Bull is interested to be hired by the Inquisitor as revealed by one of his mercenary groups. To acquire Iron Bull, the Inquisitor must finish "The Captain of the Chargers" quest and receive an invitation to the Storm Coast. The Inquisitor can receive an invitation by waiting for a messenger at the gate doors outside the Chantry in Haven.

Sera: The Elven Archer

Go to the Chantry in Val Royeaux, capitol of Orlais and meet with the Templars. After that, an arrow attached with a message will land near the Inquisitor. Follow the instructions from three satchels noted by the message to reveal Sera. However, the Inquisitor must finish first the "A Friend of Red Jenny" quest to recruit Sera.

Lady Vivienne: Enchanter And Adviser Of Empress Celene

At the courtyard of Val Royeaux, search for a messenger near the fountain on the way out of the city to get the "Ghislain Estate" quest required to receive an invitation to personally meet with Lady Vivienne. Lady Vivienne is one of the three possible choices to become the next Divine along with Leliana and Cassandra Pentaghast.

The remaining three companions which are Cassandra, Solas and Varric are default companions that will help the Inquisitor. The five companions mentioned above are optional members for the Inquisition. For the romantic relationship, check the list below for each companion and notable limitations:

- Blackwall is interested in female characters only.

- Cassandra is interested in male characters only.

- Cullen is interested in female elves and female humans only.

- Dorian is interested in male characters only.

- Iron Bull is interested in both male and female characters.

- Josephine is interested in both male and female characters.

- Sera is interested in female characters only.

- Solas is interested in female elves only.
