Driver crashes a US$6 million Koenigsegg One:1 megacar
The most expensive car crash
The Swedish car company Koenigsegg has only manufactured seven One:1 and only six remains after the car crash at the Nurburging last Monday. The One:1 is regarded to be the fastest production car in the world.
Koenigsegg released an official statement in their website:
“Koenigsegg Automotive AB can confirm reports online that a Koenigsegg One:1 was involved in a crash during testing as part of Industry Pool at the Nurburgring on Monday, 18 July. The driver was taken to hospital as per standard procedures in such situations and was released the same afternoon.
This incident is confirmation of just how difficult it is to drive at this level on the world’s ultimate proving ground. Obviously we are dismayed with this development but pleased that our safety systems worked as designed to protect our driver. ”
The Koenigsegg One:1 supercar is powered by a 5-litre engine that enables the car to reach 0-62mph in three seconds. One:1 can reach 248mph in 20 seconds and a top speed of 275mph, while its brakes puts the car to a standstill within ten seconds.
The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle at the Nurburgring circuit in Germany. The driver lost control as the car exited the track’s Fuchsröhre section and crashed through a barrier.
The Koenigsegg One:1 was attempting to beat the course’s lap record, which is currently held by the Porsche 918 Spyder. The Spyder completed the 12.8-mile-long course in six minutes and 57 seconds.
Koenigsegg have not yet stated if the car in question will be rebuilt or will a new model designed after this accident. The data gathered from this incident will hopefully be used to prevent future accidents and to improve driver safety.
The crashed car was listed at a base price of US$2.8 million (AU$3.7 million), but the Surrey-based Koenigsegg specialist Supervettura markets the One:1 for around US$6 million (AU$8 million). The One:1 was reported to have a £2 million (AU$3.5 million) asking price, while an Australian car dealership listed it for US$7.4 million (AU$9.8 million).
