English Premier League transfer news and rumours: Liverpool in failed Juventus midfielder bid, Chelsea want Sevilla star
Liverpool attempted to sign Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio earlier this summer according to Juventus CEO Giuseppe Marotta, who claimed the 29-year-old is staying at the club and will not be moving anywhere else.
The comments come after various reports had linked Marchisio with a move to Anfield, with new manager Jurgen Klopp reportedly interested. But with club legend Andrea Pirlo leaving for the MLS, and Arturo Vidal leaving for Bayern Munich in the summer, and with Paul Pogba also linked with an exit to Barcelona or even Manchester City and Chelsea, it is unlikely Juventus would have let Marchisio leave.
"We get so many offers for our players, but we are used to buying - not selling. Our focus is strong and I think Claudio's first thought is to finish his career here. Not only Liverpool, we have received several offers,” Marotta told Premium Sport, via Sky Sports.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are reported to have shown strong interest in signing Sevilla’s Yevhen Konoplyanka, with manager Jose Mourinho even travelling to watch the forward in action for Ukraine against Spain during the international break.
Shakhtar Donetsk coach Mircea Lucescu has claimed that Konoplyanka, along with Mark Teixera and Andriy Yarmolenko, were all being considered by Chelsea.
"Mourinho is interested in Yevhen Konoplyanka. I was at Ukraine versus Spain with Mourinho and he is interested in some players. Perhaps it is Yarmolenko or Teixeira, if not, then it is Konoplyanka," Lucescu told Sky.
It would be surprising if Chelsea indeed moved for Konoplyanka or Yarmolenko during the upcoming January transfer window, with both players cup-tied and unavailable for the UEFA Champions League, having already up in the competition with Sevilla and Dynamo Kiev respectively.
Louis van Gaal has ended speculation that centre-back Marcos Rojo could be leaving Manchester United in the upcoming transfer window, claiming the defender has great potential in him to be a very good player for the club.
“What I like is that he is physically a very strong guy, he has a good header of the ball and his pass is very fast. That is what we always need, we need a high speed in our positional game. When he improves and he can reach a very high level because he is not fully developed yet. I think there is great potential in him to become a very good player for Manchester United," van Gaal told MUTV, the club’s official TV channel.
