Fans of short form survival-horror are spoilt for choice at the moment. The recent release of “Resident Evil: Revelations 2 - Episode One” and Bethesda Softworks’ announcement that the first DLC pack for “The Evil Within,” called “The Assignment,” launches March 10, means fans have options.

The teaser, posted on the Bethesda Softworks YouTube channel, is brief but suitably creepy and very atmospheric. Bethesda promises that “The Assignment” will focus on a new playable character, Sebastian’s partner, Detective Juli Kidman.

Running parallel to the events of the main story line in “The Evil Within,” “The Assignment” will shed light on Kidman's relationship with the mysterious shadowy organisation, Mobius. “The Assignment” acts as the first in a two-part tale featuring Kidman. The PlayStation Blog states that Kidman’s tale will be wrapped up with a second DLC pack called “The Consequence,” which will be released in the coming months. A third and final DLC pack called “The Executioner” allows players to take control of the game’s antagonist, The Keeper.

“The Assignment” will feature all-new enemy types and gameplay, focusing more on stealth tactics than combat. Speaking on the Bethesda Blog, John Jonas, game director of both “The Assignment” and “The Consequence,” explains the studios’ reasoning.

“Since we decided early on the character was going to be Kidman, I wanted the DLC to play different rather than having it feel like just a character skin. My favourite DLCs have been ones that give the player a new spin on gameplay, while still feeling connected to the main title,” Jonas said.

Jonas adds that the DLC will answer a lot of questions players might have regarding Ruvik and STEM, as well as a number of other characters from “The Evil Within.” He stated that while players should expect answers, the team decided to leave certain plot-points open-ended.

Bethesda will be hosting a livestream on its Twitch Channel on March 9 to show off the first snippets of gameplay. “The Assignment” launches on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC on March 10.
