Fable 3 Review: Does it live up to the hype?
The third installment to the popular Fable series finally debuted on the PC months after its console release. The third person role playing Fable will have gamers embarking on an epic adventure to ascend the throne.
Fable III follows the character of a young prince or princess and how the character will be able to wrest the throne from the rule of your evil King brother. So far, so trite. The story might not push any boundaries but then again the strength of Fable is how there are so many choices your character can make in the quest for the crown.
One of the staples of the franchise is the moral choices of your character that shapes how the story unfolds. If you want to go around killing NPC's you will be labeled as a murderer and look like one with horns and all. The disappointing thing to this game is the lack of follow through. You can loot and pillage one village but the main quest won't be affected at all. You can make choices but the game doesn't punish you for the wrong one. The freedom is fun at first but it quickly gets to be tedious to do quest after quest for characters you just don't care about.
Combat is also repetitive. You can mix a melee weapon, a firearm and a mix of magic spells but you only have one attack button the left click. Combat is reduced to you mindlessly clicking your mouse. The sword you found in level 2 will attack the same way as the sword you find in higher levels. With enemies at every turn this can get really boring.
Despite these flaws, Fable III can be forgiven because it is one gorgeous looking game. The world of Albion is a joy to explore. You can spend hours just looking at the many locations the game will take you to. The music and voice acting is top notch.
If you haven't played a Fable game before then this sequel is a perfectly acceptable RPG for any gamer. It has nearly 20 hours of gameplay and a looks pretty to boot. However, Fable fans may find this a bit of a disappointment when compared to Fable II.
