Facebook and Spotify to provide streaming music service
Facebook and Spotify are joining in a collaborative effort to provide a streaming music service to Facebook users. Business magazine Forbes reported that in the next two weeks, Facebook users will be able to see a Spotify icon on their news feed. Clicking on the icon will allow the service to install on the user's computer.
The Spotify service will allow Facebook users to listen to the music streaming site's music library and listen to at the same time with their friends, who are logged in on Facebook,
At this time Facebook spokespersons have no official announcement on this development but co-founder Mark Zuckerberg has commented at a G8 summit that the company is interested in integrating music and film industries in the social network.
According to the Forbes article, Facebook is testing a service that allows users to stream songs from Spotify's music library. There is already an application in place that allows users to share the songs they are listening to at Spotify with their friends.
Spotify provides streaming services to Sweden, Norway, Britain, Finland, France, Spain and the Netherland but is unable to operate in the United States because it doesn't have the necessary licenses. The company reached the one million paying customers mark last March. The free version of Spotify has around seven million users.
The streaming service's partnership with Facebook will face an uncertain future in the US. The European streaming music company still has to convince all the labels for music licenses. The benefits of the partnership are obvious. Facebook intention of becoming an entertainment hub will gain more traction and Spotify will be able to reach the millions of Facebook users.
