Facebook On Yet Another Overhaul
The changes elicited mixed reactions. Some liked it not, some liked it real hot.
Its 750 million users were shocked to see changes in their home pages in the past few weeks, such as larger photo displays and a feature that categorizes friends' lists. But more is yet to come.
But social media networking phenomenon Facebook will give socialization another whole new meaning as it is expected to announce more changes on Thursday on its annual f8 conference in San Francisco. The f8 conference is a gathering held for developers who design games and other applications for Facebook.
Facebook now has a "top stories" shown on top of its pages, with "recent stories" listed chronologically.
On the page's right side is a live feed, called "ticker," showing all ongoing activity of other users. It will then later appear in the news feeds.
Facebook said the changes are meant to keep its almost billion users engaged, usually based on user requests. Others are observations made on users' behavior - what they enjoy using, what makes them spend more time on Facebook, what type of ads users frequently check out.
The never-ending tweaking has been good for business, too. A research firm estimated the social site will bring in a total of $3.8 billion in worldwide advertising this year and $5.8 million in 2012.
On Thursday, Facebook users, kibitzers, supporters and critics are all waiting for further developments following recent weeks' hype that it will launch further improvements.
It is reportedly bundling up its "Like" button with other sub-buttons to introduce a new platform "Read," "Watched," "Listened" and "Want" buttons. The new buttons essentially expand the "Like" button, Facebook's badge that helped propel the social site into what it is now.
The "Read," "Watched," and "Listened" will be new sharing buttons, while "Want" is a social commerce button. It functions as an indicator on products that a user liked and would plan to purchase. Facebook hopes to generate cross partnerships with other businesses with the new button.
