FEATURE: Cracker.com - Australia's top classifieds, forums site?
Bound for head-on-head with Craigslist
With more than 20 billion page views per month, the centralized network of online communities founded by Craig Newmark is the 35th top website worldwide, per Alexa.com ranking. Craigslist.org, a free site classified ads and discussion forums, features over 80 million new advertisements and over 2 million new job listings each month.
In Australia, a popular web community site is Cracker.com. Is it bound to surpass Craigslist of the U.S.?
Just like Craigslist, Cracker has sections devoted to jobs, stuff, cars, community, real estate, housing for rent and sale, services, and dating and personals.
"Cracker's aim is simple: to give local communities a free voice. We a offer free classified ads on a town-to-town basis. We don't have online auctions or a global-domination agenda. We simply want to connect (and entertain) local Australians, in local suburbs, in local cities," according to the Website.
"The best thing is, almost all of our services are entirely free."
Cracker currently has localized listings for Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin, and Hobart.
Cracker also has a user flagging system for identifying and deleting illegal and inappropriate postings. The Website states, "Of course, we can't allow illegal or unethical behaviour (and we'll delete such content if we find it) - but ultimately, this site's content is up to you. We don't censor content unless the Cracker community specifically votes for it (and in large numbers). Go ahead, try your best to shock us. Strong language? Pffft. Unless other Cracker users request it, you won't get banned. Yes. Really."
Cracker notes that it does not offer online auctions and does not charge hidden after-sale fees or commissions.
Cracker is 537th in Alexa'sInternet traffic rankings in Australia.
Google, Facebook, and YouTube are the top three most visited sites in Australia, according to Alexa. Australia currently has more than 10.3 million Facebook users, according to CheckFacebook.com.
While Cracker trails top sites in Australia by a wide margin, it doesn't fall far from Craigslist's Australian site. Craigslit.com.au is only the 469th most popular site by traffic Down Under. SEEK is Australia's number one job search site and is 27th in Alexa's list.
