FINA World Championships 2015: Aussie women’s swimming team wins gold
The Australian women’s swimming team has claimed gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay at the FINA World Championships 2015 currently taking place in Kazan, Russia.
The team comprised of Emily Seebohm, Emma McKeon, and sisters Bronte and Cate Campbell claimed the top spot in the podium with a time of 3 minutes and 31.48 seconds. The second place went to the Netherlands with 3 minutes and 35.52 seconds, while the defending champions, the U.S., won third place after finishing 3 minutes and 34.61 seconds.
Bronte Campbell said that the victory is the “highlight” of her year, reported Sydney Morning Herald. She added that it was already an amazing feeling when they clinched the silver medal in 2013, but to claim the gold with her sister was incredible.
“To stand together on the podium and sing the national anthem with your big sister is something not many get to do,” Bronte said.
In the latest medal tally, Australia ranks first place with two medals (one bronze and one gold) in the World Swimming Championships event. Jess Ashwood won bronze at the 400m freestyle, the first time that Australia has won a world championship medal in 400m freestyle since Hayley Lewis in 1991.
Australia also won two bronze medals in the diving competition. Melissa Wu and Domonic Bedggood won bronze at the Mixed 10m platform event.
