San Francisco 49ers’ rookie Jarryd Hayne has been taking part in his first NFL training camp with the club as the former rugby star continues his transition from Australian to American football. Hayne, who was signed by the 49ers in March, said he is ready to face full contact workouts in the club’s two-week training camp at Levi’s Stadium in California.

Hayne, one of the 49ers most recognised free agent signings this offseason, will start his workout on Tuesday for San Francisco with helmets and pads. Despite the expected physicality in the 49ers’ training camp, Hayne appears unfazed about what are in store for him.

“I’m sure there will be times there I get smashed and I run a little bit too upright. I’d rather get hit hard and learn like that than beat around the bush and fancy my way through it,” Hayne said, according to Fox Sports.

The 27-year-old Hayne made progress in learning the style required for a running back during organised team activities and minicamp. The Australian rugby star said his transition to the NFL is still a process but admitted that he is enjoying the shift to American football, as reported by 49ers.com. Hayne added that he is more concerned in fulfilling his role as a running back than being hit by defensive linemen, saying that learning his position is more critical.

Hayne underwent minor foot surgery in June to remove a cyst from the bottom of his left foot. The 49ers hopeful admitted the operation left him about 80 to 90 per cent healthy for the grueling training camp, while still regaining his speed and fitness.

The athlete signed a three-year contract with the 49ers for a guaranteed US$100,000 (AU$137,000) after going undrafted. The Aussie footballer’s bid to get a roster spot will be tough in the coming days, with San Francisco slicing the 90-man squad to 75 on Sept. 1, then to a 53-man roster for the regular season, which starts on Sept. 5.
