Final fight with Andre Berto: Floyd Mayweather ready to prove he is ‘best ever’ in September
Floyd Mayweather has confirmed that he will defend his welterweight world titles against Andre Berto on Sept. 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Mayweather, who owns an undefeated record of 48-0, will reportedly have his fight with Berto televised on Showtime PPV.
The undefeated champ declared on Twitter that he is ready to get back into the ring in September, in what could be the last fight of Mayweather’s illustrious boxing career. “Money,” who is looking to duplicate boxing legend Rocky Marciano’s undefeated streak of 49 wins, said he will bring his “A-game” in the fight against the Haitian-American challenger and prove once again why he is “the best ever.”
The pound-for-pound king has been staying sharp and preparing for his final appearance in the boxing ring. Mayweather’s last match was in May when he defeated Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao in a mega-fight that broke pay-per-view records. “Pretty Boy” will be on his last fight with Showtime/CBS after signing a six-fight contract in 2013. Mayweather currently holds the WBA and WBC titles at 147 pounds.
On the other hand, Berto, who carries a record of 30-3 with 23 knockouts, has lost three of his past six bouts and has been considered the underdog heading into the September fight. However, the two-time welterweight title holder believes he has what it takes to stain Mayweather’s clean record.
"Best believe that I plan to bring it to Floyd and I'm not concerned about what 48 other fighters have been unable to do. Somebody is getting knocked out and it won't be me,” Berto said, reports ESPN.
Meanwhile, British fighter Amir Khan has lost hopes of fighting Mayweather after the Berto-Mayweather card was confirmed. According to The Guardian, Khan insisted recently that a deal to fight the American champ was close, saying that he has strengthened his case after winning over Chris Algieri. However, the deal never emerged, with Berto officially booked as Mayweather’s next and final challenger.
