Fingerprint Sensor Favoured on Samsung Galaxy S5 Over Premature Iris Scanner; Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy S6 May Feature It
Samsung favours fingerprint sensor technology as an added security feature on the upcoming Galaxy S5 after careful consideration over the premature iris recognition. The fingerprint sensor feature will be placed under the display of Galaxy S5 for owners to scan fingerprints right on the screen. Furthermore, eye scanner technology may become available on Galaxy Note 4, if lucky.
Fingerprint Sensor
Apple implemented fingerprint sensor on iPhone 5S to increase security measure against spectators as well as being an additional marketing feature for potential buyers. Korean tech giant, Samsung, seems to have favoured the same security implementation on the upcoming match of the iPhone 5S - the Galaxy S5.
The Korean Herald reported that after careful consideration of iris recognition technology, the company has chosen fingerprint sensor over the eye scanner due to premature level of the latter technology to avoid major issues.
The Galaxy S5's fingerprint sensor will be implemented under the display instead of on the home button, opposing security design of Apple on the iPhone 5S. It will allow users to scan their fingerprints right on the screen to unlock the device whenever they want to use it. It is not yet determined if the feature has an option to be manually disabled like any other security default options from Android.
Iris Recognition Technology
Samsung may not totally trash the idea of iris recognition and simply wait for it to become stable and mature enough for commercial models. According to the report, sources revealed the impractical approach of iris recognition over fingerprint sensor and additional requirements, such as having another camera sensor built on the device in order to make full functionality, made the technology less reliable as of date.
"Who would want to put their handset up close to their eyes for authentication in places like movie theaters and bed, or even while they are driving?," SamMobile quotes an industrial source.
This makes iris recognition less practical than fingerprint sensor on mobile devices and could even possibly become useless later on. Adding another camera sensor on the Galaxy S5 will not only make it more expensive but also thicker which contradicts Samsung's design among flagship devices.
In case the eye scanning technology becomes mature enough, the market may actually see such security feature on Galaxy Note 4 or Galaxy S6 instead and probably not make the device thicker than it should. Iris recognition should be fast and responsive when unlocking the screen to avoid users on getting bumped just to use their devices.
