Flash, Windows on Apple iPad?
If you're an iPad owner that misses Microsoft's line of products or play flash videos on the Internet all you have to do is download a new iPad service called OnLive Desktop Plus.
The new app from cloud computing company OnLive will unite your iPad with services you thought you'd never see again on the iOS. OnLive Desktop Plus will bring fully functional versions of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and best of all you don't have to waste your iPad's memory on these programs, everything's hosted on OnLive's powerful remote servers. The PC that's running your iPad's Windows experience is actually thousands of miles away. So every time you edit or review your Word documents or make a Power Point presentation you're actually sending signals to a farm of computers miles away. The screen image is sent back to your iPad with little lag time. OnLive offers 2 gigabytes of online storage as well as Windows Media Player and other Microsoft accessories like Paint, Notepad and Calculator. This is a completely unique offering from OnLive. While there are other apps that give you a stripped down version of an Office program but OnLive Desktop Plus gives you the full Windows Office Suite experience. For people who are used to working with Windows and want to carry this experience around on their iPad this is a fantastic app to have on their tablets.
The free version of OnLive Desktop Plus was released on January but OnLive's been working hard to make the service even better. On Wednesday, the company added Adobe Reader and introduced a $4.99-a-month OnLive Desktop Plus service with Internet Explorer for those that still use that browser. There'll be a $9.99 a month Pro service that adds 50Gb of storage and priority access to OnLive's servers.
You might be wondering why you'd want to use Internet Explorer on your iPad when it has a perfectly useable Safari browser. However Safari doesn't have Adobe Flash which is still widely used on the Internet. With Internet Explorer you can fully access websites that Safari only shows mobile-only versions. OnLive plans to add Firefox and Chrome browsers later on.
OnLive Desktop Plus is available to everyone but to fully exploit the service you'd need fast Internet connection speeds. With a fast connection of at least 2Mbps, OnLive is fast and browsing the Web is a breeze.
