Floyd Mayweather Sr. Says Floyd Jr. Might Go After Rocky Marciano’s 49-0 Record
Floyd Mayweather Jr. has successfully won all his 47 professional fights. He is only two wins away from matching the late heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano’s 49-0 undefeated streak. According to Floyd Sr., the younger Mayweather might pursue Marciano’s record even after his Showtime contract has ended.
In an exclusive interview with Boxing Insider, Floyd Sr. opened up about his thoughts on Floyd Jr.’s professional boxing career now that the younger Mayweather is close to fulfilling his contract with Showtime. Floyd Sr. said that his son might go after the 1950's legend Marciano’s professional boxing record, but he made it clear that he doesn’t care if his son even attempts to break Marciano’s record or not. What is reportedly important for Floyd Sr. is that his son’s legacy in boxing is “safe.” Floyd Sr. also talked about the role that “greed” could play in the younger Mayweather’s decision to eclipse Marciano’s record.
“I think he might do it, but myself personally, I don’t care if he tries to beat Rocky Marciano’s record or not,” Floyd Sr. said. “I just want him to get out safe, he went in great, come out great.”
If Floyd Jr. emerges victorious against Manny Pacquiao when they clash on May 2 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, he will achieve his 48th straight victory in his professional boxing career. However, the younger Mayweather’s contract with Showtime will only allow him to equal Marciano’s record for 49-0, given that he wins his final bout.
If Mayweather is able to break Marciano’s record, there is still one more record to beat. Retired Mexican professional boxer Ricardo “El Finito” Lopez, who retired in 2001, had 51 wins, zero loss and one draw under his name. Lopez was rated at Strawweight and Junior Flyweight. He was a former International Boxing Federation light flyweight champion. He was also a World Boxing Council, World Boxing Association and World Boxing Organization strawweight champion.
Could Floyd Jr. possibly break Marciano’s venerable record of 49 professional victories and retire with an unblemished record? What if Pacquiao beats him on their May 2 epic showdown?
