'Game of Thrones' Season 6 spoilers: How Olenna put mass murder thoughts into Cersei
Cersei got her revenge in the finale episode of “Game of Thrones” Season 6. But the idea of mass murder was apparently given to her by Olenna Tyrell. The showrunners appear in a new video that has been released online to talk about the events in episode 10.
[Spoiler alert] Executive Producer D.B. Weiss explained that they decided to work with what they had on the table, and one of the things they looked at was Wildfire. The existence of the dangerous material in King’s Landing was previously confirmed in Jaime’s (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) conversation with Brienne (Gwendoline Christie). All Cersei needed was a push to use it.
“Everything Olenna says about Cersei earlier in the season is true...that she’s got no more friends left…she’s no more power left. Olenna asks her point blank ‘are you going to kill everyone yourself,’” Weiss said.
The producer explained that it is possible that the bitter words of the Queen of Thorns “augmented” the idea in Cersei’s (Lena Headey) head and that resulted in the mass murder in “Game of Thrones” Season 6 finale. The first one to discover the Wildfire in the catacombs was Lancel Lannister (Eugene Simon), but he could not do anything to stop the plan.
Another character who was quick to grasp that Cersei has made some devious preparations was Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer). However, the High Sparrow (Jonathan Pryce) did not heed her advice.
“And then boom,” Weiss said. “She’s really achieved a stunning, very surprising victory against everybody who’s opposing her all at once,” Weiss said.
However, while she was busy celebrating her victory, her son was all alone in his room. The producer said that if Cersei had been there with her son, he would not have committed suicide.
“She failed him and she alone failed him here,” Weiss said.
Executive Producer David Benioff said that the death of Cersei’s last child in “Game of Thrones” Season 6 is a “terrifying prospect.” He explained that the children were the one thing that “humanised” the character. All that she has left now is the power that comes with the Iron Throne, and Benioff said that that doesn’t bode well for anyone. “The real question now is... what does she want?” the producer said.
