Gest's wearable keyboard functions like thumbless gloves
There is a new campaign on Kickstarter that aims to put a virtual keyboard in the hands of its potential users. With that in mind, Gest has come up with a unique device made of wires that are essentially clipped onto the user's fingers.
Such device might initially sound odd, but its purpose actually makes it a very useful tool. Gest's new wearable device functions like thumbless gloves - something that the market has never had before.
The straps, which can be easily adjusted around the user's fingers, are going to be wrapped around the palm. Just inside the primary control unit are several gyroscopes, accelerometres and magnetometres. All of which combine to turn the fingers' motions into actual output that computers are built to understand.
There are four wires with clips on each end. These clips are attached to the user's fingers. Gest's new wearable keyboard becomes effective when the user types in the air or on any surface, instead of tapping and clicking an actual, physical keyboard.
The device is also made with an open SDK, which allows users to use other gestures such as when manipulating certain desktop objects the way one would with a mouse. There might be no wire or clip for the user's thumb, but Tech Times reports that there is no need for one after all.
Apotact Labs, the startup company behind Gest, has stated that the device actually does not need a contact point to read thumbs. Instead, the device will read the palm's actions and merely infers what the thumb is doing at that point. Apotact Labs is convinced that Gest's wearable keyboard is going to be at its maximum potential when typing on smartphones and with virtual reality goggles.
At present, the Kickstarter campaign is looking for funding worth about $141,954. Gest is hoping to start shipping its wearable keyboard by November next year.
