Google Kills The Nexus 5 To Boost Sales Of The Bigger Nexus 6
The giant company still sells the more affordable and smaller Nexus 5 which is a great alternative to Nexus 6. However, users who recently visited Google Play Store might have noticed that Google no longer lists either the red or white versions of the handset, leaving the black variant as the only option to choose from. But according to CNET, the 16GB and 32G black editions are still offered on the page, though Google lists the specific product as out of stock.
For whatever reason, if the red and white variants were just out of stock then the devices should still be listed on the website. The removal might be a hint that Google has decided to stop producing and selling the mentioned versions. Obviously, the Nexus 6 is currently the company's priority and the rumours of ditching the Nexus 5 (or some of its variants) might be a marketing strategy to boost the more expensive Nexus model.
Looking at Tech Radar's report, a Google spokesperson was said to confirm that the production of the Nexus 5 has really stopped. The source even warned that once the model is gone then it will really be gone and even suggested that consumers should get one while it still exists in the market. The spokesperson also added that the Nexus 5 will be available for sale on Google Play and through other retailers in the first quarter of 2015 until supplies last.
Meanwhile, some fans may be sad to see the Nexus 5 get wiped from the Google Play Store but Google strongly offers its successor. The Nexus 6 sports an impressive list of improvements which include better display, resolution, more powerful processor and bigger storage capacity. However, the much bigger size of the Nexus 6 may not fit the needs of other consumers who prefer a smaller-sized phone.
Finally, the Nexus 5 is still available on major retailers like Best Buy and Amazon. However, none of the major mobile carriers have the device listed on its websites.
