Google Nexus 6 Release Date Update: Expect a 5.2-Inch Nexus X & 5.9-Inch Motorola Shamu Phablet
Google seems planning to collide head-on with Apple's iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus as a new report suggests that the Nexus 6 on release date will actually come in two models - a 5.8-inch Motorola Shamu phablet and a 5.2-inch Nexus X.
Obviously, the bigger Nexus smartphone is designed to tussle with the jumbo-sized 6 Plus while the smaller variant will take on the regular-sized iPhone 6. Apple's 2014 flagships are now available while Google's hero phones are expected to touchdown anytime between mid-October and early November.
In a new report by 9to5Google, the spotlight was mostly trained on a device that allegedly will boast of a 5.9-inch screen profile. This is the same kit that was leaked earlier and took the codename Motorola Shamu, added the report.
However, the Android-focused blog site did not rule out the likelihood of Nexus fans having to choose from two Nexus 6 builds once the handset is launched. "There might actually be more than one Nexus 6/X from Motorola," Stephen Hall of 9to5Google said, adding that leaked specs and benchmark results of the 5.2-inch edition have been coming out lately.
In his report though, Hall mostly delved on the Motorola Shamu details, which also come with a device image (viewable here).
The Shamu is essentially the scaled up version of the 2014 Moto X but the former will display unique features that bear the Nexus imprints plus functions that are in accordance with its supersized profile, Hall revealed.
Echoing the recently outed Shamu specs, the report added that the giant Nexus 6 will sport a Quad HD screen resolution of 2560 x 1440 with 498 screen pixels per inch. Bringing the device into life is a Snapdragon 805 chip though Google could still squeeze in the use of a 64-bit CPU at the last minute, said the report.
On the camera side, it will be a combo of 13MP on rear and 2MP on front. Users are also assured of a fairly good storage capacity as the Moto Shamu will have 32GB of on-board memory. It is unclear for now if a memory expansion slot will be part of the package.
Juicing up the supposed upsized Nexus 6 is a gigantic 3200mAh battery, Hall said.
And as always the case, the latest Android version will be showcases first with the device - that is Android 5.0 or Android L/Lion/Lemon Meringue Pie.
The actual Nexus 6 release date remains a big question mark but Google is reportedly hosting an event on October 16, which many in the Android world deemed as the tech giant's prepositioning for a wholesale rollout that also involves the Nexus 8 or HTC Nexus 9 and Android L.
