Google Plans to Launch 'Nexus TV' Set-top Box in 2014?
The home theatre is one area Google has failed to make some strides in. The company has released a few failed products in the past like the Nexus Q, among others. However, these failures have not stopped the tech giant from trying to penetrate the living room market once again. New rumours started recently about a Nexus TV already cooking for launch in 2014.
Google is seemingly gearing up to dive into the TV market all over again, according to a report made by The Information (subscription required). Rumours suggest that the Nexus TV set-top box will be released as early as the first half of 2014. According to GottaBeMobile, the un-named source who leaked the info "possibly even saw the device in question."
There is a possibility that Google might be delivering some Web-rich media in the living room, not the usual TV. Most likely, Google will incorporate a wide array of Web content from its own YouTube, Google Music, Google Movies and TV. Moreover, Google Search is also expected to be in the device which will be running on Android 4.4 KitKat OS. This rumoured TV, which will be under the Nexus brand, could be an interesting device, as it will pack a bunch of Android and Google features.
Events start to align nicely which point to the direction of the Nexus TV, although at this point, news are not yet close to accurate. There are reports about Google working on a Nexus TV with LG, and if new rumours are to be believed, then the device won't be an actual TV but a set-top box instead. Google could also collaborate with other manufacturers, like Logitech or even Samsung, to create the device.
As of the moment, Google is already working pretty hard on the powerful yet budget-friendly Chromecast to deliver content to HDTV and other living room devices. Next year, consumers could see a broader and bolder attempt to deliver this Nexus TV. And if the rumours are accurate and the Nexus TV will be as competitively priced as the Chromecast, undoubtedly, it could shake up the industry.
