'Gotham' season 2, episode 3 recap: The Last Laugh
In this week’s episode of “Gotham,” Detective Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and his partner, Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue), go on the hunt for Jerome Valeska (Cameron Monaghan). Jerome is the lunatic who went on a shooting spree in the Gotham City Police Department, killing several poilce officers. Meanwhile, scheming philanthropist Theo Galavan (James Frain), the mastermind behind the crimes, also reveals his real intentions.
Jim and Harvey are desperate to find the man who killed their colleagues, including Police Commissioner Sarah Essen. They interrogate a number of street thugs and Harvey suggests that they probably need to approach Penguin for some help, because he is well-informed about criminal actiities.
Meanwhile, Jerome makes their work easier by not hiding out. He murders his father and decides to show up at a gala for the Children’s Hospital. The event is organised by Jim’s girlfriend, Dr. Lesley Thompkins (Morena Baccarin). Jim hasn’t made it to the event yet, when Lesley tells him that Jerome and Barbara Keane (Erin Richards) have taken the stage in place of the hired magician.
Jerome takes Lesley and the rest of the guests hostage. He murders the deputy mayor in front of everyone and threatens to start killing the rest of the guests one by one. Gotham City’s elite members of society are present, including the Galavans. While Jerome is terrorising the guests, Theo steps up and pretends to speak up against him. Barbara makes the whole skit believable by knocking Theo on the head.
Things look grim when Jerome threatens to kill Bruce Wayne. Luckily, he is saved when Theo finally comes around after he was knocked unconscious. He gets up and stabs Jerome in the throat. The lunatic ends up dead, after being betrayed by the man, who he thought was his ally.
Galavan comes out as the hero of the evening. Jim and the rest of the people are unaware that the hostage situation was his plan in the first place. Barbara manages to escape through a trap door before Jim could get to her and she remains to be one of the few people who know about Theo’s plans to take over the city.
With Jerome Valeska now dead, assumptions that he would eventually develop into the Joker have gone up in smoke. Find out how things play out for the rest of the characters when “Gotham” returns next week.
“Gotham” Season 2, airs every Monday at 8:00 pm EDT on FOX.
