'Grey's Anatomy' Actress Clarifies Speculations That Show Is Ending Because Patrick Dempsey Left
According to “Grey’s Anatomy” Star, Caterina Scorsone, Patrick Dempsey leaving does not spell the doom of the series, as many are starting to speculate. In fact, Scorsone believes that with Dempsey’s character Derek Shepherd now out of the picture, a fundamental change has taken place, providing newer and more exciting stories that can be told.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Scorsone denies that there are talks of “Grey’s Anatomy” permanently ending because Patrick Dempsey left, whose character is one of the most beloved character on the series. Scorsone plays Derek’s youngest sister, Amelia, who replaced her big brother as head of neuro of Seattle on this season. Reeling from shock over “McDreamy’s” departure from the show in an episode fittingly called “How to Save a Life,” fans are speculating the end is near for the series and that the upcoming season 12 must be the last one. The show is currently on its 11th season and there are three more episodes left. However, Scorsone said that there have not been any conversations about season 12 being the last for “Grey’s Anatomy.”
According to Scorsone, the series is even bound to get more exciting. As in Shondaland, everything is always unpredictable. She said now that Meredith (Ellen Pompeo's character) lost her best friend Christina, played by Sandra Oh, who left the series earlier on, and now Derek, a lot of stories would open up and the series is about to become richer. She added that these events have an effect on everyone “profoundly” but created a “really rich soil for new things to grow in.” This is why everyone has a “really electric feeling” about the series’ future. She said that even though killing off Derek was such a shocker, even for them, It is exciting as well. " It was also kind of exciting, in a way, because he's been such a huge part of the show and it has been defining in a lot of ways and now we're moving toward all of these other stories that are now opening up,” she said.
She added that what is beautiful about this episode, even though there is a lot of grief, is that it drives home the point that the show is not just about drama and romance, it is also about “human resilience.” She said her own character as Amelia would suffer a huge blow because of this since Amelia is very close to Derek, and because she personally went through a lot of loss in her life, when it comes to men she loved.
For his part, Patrick Dempsey is not too sad that his character departed from the show just like that, especially since it is a known fact that his contract has not ended yet. He exclusively told Entertainment Weekly that this twist just “kind of happened” but he “like the way it has all played out. He also said the show would “evolve” not end.
